SANTORINI , 15,550 inhabitants, a completely unique Cycladic island with an area of less than 80 km2. With its architecture and overall concept, it is one of the most interesting places in Greece, perhaps even in the whole world. It was most likely formed as a result of the largest volcanic eruption in the history of mankind, when the island was covered in places with a layer of ash up to 60 meters high.
The island of Santorini has an excellent ferry connection with Crete, the Athens port of Piraeus and is the crossroads of ferry routes throughout the Aegean Sea. An international airport with connections from Vienna or other European cities is also an advantage.
And what are the main attractions of this island?
Most tourists who are on the island for the first time head to the romantic town of Oia with breathtaking sunsets, to the highest village of Imerovigli with a great view of the opposite islet of Thirasia, or to the capital of the island of Fira for a night adventure.
Equally well-known and recommended places where you won't be crowded with tourist crowds are the former capital of the island of Pyrgos, or the beautiful village of Emporeio with its medieval district of Kastro.
Tourists admiring the sights will certainly be captivated by the excavations in Akrotiri, the archaeological museum in the capital Fira, or the old ancient Thera on the Mesa Vouno mountain. Other attractions include a maritime museum, wine cellars and many other attractions.
What should not be left out at the end and is completely unique?
How about an active volcano and a trip with swimming in sea water heated up to 45 degrees Celsius? the climb to Nea Kameni, where sulphurous vapors rise from the hot soil?
Beaches of the island
The beaches of the island are dark, pebbly with a transition to fine sand. Among the most famous are Kamari, Perissa. The beaches Red beach with red rocks and White beach with a white rock wall are also unique.
