Spinalonga andcity Agios Nikolaos

Spinalonga, the last leper colony in Europe. It is located not far from the resort of Elounda, from where we will go by boat to the island of Spinalonga.

Originally, the Venetians fortified the island in 1579 by building a fortress with 40 cannons, and they are the best-preserved walls in Europe. From 1903 to 1957, it used to be a leper colony where lepers had a better life, medical help and economic support.  The ruins of a market, a hospital and lots of small houses where people with leprosy lived in isolation. You can explore them.

When we leave Spinalonga Island, we have free time to explore the unique village of Elounda or we have the option to go swimming in the crystal clear waters of Elounda Bay.

Before we make our way back to Heraklion, we will visit Agios Nikolaos, a town of 14,000 inhabitants built on the coast of Mirabello Bay. In the center of Agios Nikolaos is Lake Voulismeni, probably created by an earthquake. There we can take a coffee break or walk around the lake, which will give you a great view from above of the center and the port of Agios Nikolaos. Next to the beautiful harbor there are shady streets lined with trees and shops that give you the opportunity to buy souvenirs, ice cream, etc.

Our last stop is at an olive oil factory in Malia,  with a tasting of Cretan olive oil.
